The impact of stress
Stress can take a huge toll on our bodies and relentless overwhelm or sadness can leave you both emotionally and nutritionally malnourished. There is a deep connection between the gut and our emotions and so taking the time to prepare balanced, nutritious meals is essential for your own health and well-being.
Little things that can help
Making little adjustments can make all the difference, here are a few things that may help:
- If your appetite is reduced, try eating smaller meals or portions more regularly
- Eat plenty of vegetables and fruit, grains, pulses, nuts and seeds
- Choose wholegrain instead of white bread and pasta, it is easier to digest and a healthier option
- Reduce your intake of refined sugars, instead consider using raw honey or maple syrup
- Drink plenty of water and/or herbal teas
- Reduce your intake of alcohol, caffeine and sugary drinks
- Eat foods that contain healthy fats such as avocado and nuts, instead of saturated fats
- Try not to substitute healthy meals for quick and easy processed foods
- Do treat yourself, but try and choose healthy options 80% of the time
