Tips for Funeral Catering

If you are planning a menu for a funeral or celebration of life keep it simple, with food that doesn’t require too much attention during the day. You can always buy pre-prepared frozen food, and friends and family are always more than happy to help. Remember to take in to account dietary restrictions such as gluten-free or vegetarian.

Buffet and Finger Food

A buffet is a simple and popular choice for funeral receptions. A selection of sandwiches, cocktail sausages, mini quiches, and maybe a board of cold meats and cheeses can work well. Wraps with a selection of fillings such as cheese and cucumber, or chicken and avocado, are quick and easy to prepare.

Hot Comfort Foods

Comforting foods such as cottage pie, macaroni cheese, or lasagne can be made in large quantities and served with some chunky bread and a green salad. Again, do ask friends and family, a number of people could bring a particular dish to cater for larger numbers.

Mixed Salads, Bread and Dips

A simple green salad, tomato and pasta salads are easy to prepare and can be served alongside a basket of bread and some dips such as hummus.

Puddings, Drinks, Coffees and Teas

If you are having a buffet, easy to nibble puddings such as brownies can work well, or you could have a fruit salad or cheese platter. Make sure there are jugs of water and a selection of hot drinks such as teas and coffee. If you are serving alcohol it may be helpful to also have a choice of non-alcoholic soft drinks such as elderflower cordial.

Pre-prepared and Frozen Food

If you are catering for a funeral, pre-prepared, frozen food can sometimes make things easier. Many dishes can be prepared in advance, frozen, and then reheated on the day. There are also a number of companies – or you may have a local chef – that can deliver small or large quantities of frozen food, such as hams, mini quiches, cottage pies and brownies, which you can drop in your freezer until needed.
