Creating a Digital Memorial

Creating a digital memorial is beautiful way to celebrate someone’s life and keep their memory alive. It enables family and friends to contribute and share their thoughts, photos and memories. Here are some inspirational ideas for digital memorials and QR code integration: 

Interactive Online Memorial pages

There are lots of online tribute and memorial options, including with social media sites like Facebook, or with end-of-life providers and platforms, including some funeral directors.

These sites enable you to create a dedicated webpage or memorial page which can include a biography, photos, written stories, music, tributes, and videos. These pages can serve as a digital time capsule, containing letters, audio recordings, and photos that capture the essence of someone’s life. It could also include significant moments, favorite quotes, or historical events they lived through. 

Memorial pages like this can be linked via a QR code, for example on an Order of Service or a on a gravestone or commemorative plaque. QR codes can even be embedded on pieces of jewellery.

Video Tribute with QR Code

Put together a video compilation of photos and videos of the person’s life. This could also include recorded stories from family and friends about their memories of the person.

Print a QR code on the Order of Service or frame it as part of a picture. Scanning the code would lead to the video tribute allowing others to share in these memories.

Virtual Garden or Digital Space

AR (Augmented Reality) Memorial

It may not be for everyone, but new AR technology enables people to create an immersive experience where a 3D image or video of the person can appear when someone scans the QR code.

There is also technology which allows people to create an interactive ‘bot’ of their person. The bot is trained on images, videos, recordings and social media interactions by the person, enabling it to respond in the way the person may have done if they were still alive.

For many people this might feel inappropriate or uncomfortable, but for others it may aide the grieving process and help them to still feel connected to their loved one.

These ideas mix the emotional connection of a memorial with the accessibility and personal touch of digital spaces. QR codes can make it easier to share a legacy and provide ongoing, interactive experiences for those who want to honour and remember the individual.
