William and Lily McKeeman – Cherished Services

This week on WHITEBALLOON INSIGHTS we loved hearing from William and Lily McKeeman at Cherished Services about the national service they provide tending graves for families, and the comfort this can bring in the weeks, months and years following a bereavement.

Q: You provide a wonderful service looking after loved ones’ graves and memorials for families throughout the UK. Can tell us a bit about why you started Cherished?

Cherished was born from our shared belief that the memory of a loved one deserves ongoing care — not just in the immediate aftermath of loss. Coming from families with strong public service backgrounds, we were raised with values of respect, duty, and compassion. We started Cherished because we understand how sometimes it can be difficult for families — whether they live far away, face mobility issues, or find visiting overwhelming — to regularly tend to a grave.

We don’t see what we do as a task or a service to be ticked off. For us, each visit is an act of remembrance. A way to show that someone’s life, and their legacy, continues to be cherished.

Q: For those that are not so familiar with grave tending services, can you give a brief overview of what it involves?

Grave tending is about caring for a final resting place with the same kindness, attention, and respect you would show if you were able to visit yourself.

Our services range from one-off visits to regular, subscription-based care, depending on what families need. Some simply want reassurance before a special anniversary or visit, while others appreciate ongoing maintenance throughout the year.

We carry out careful and respectful cleaning, including light maintenance or more intensive deep cleans when needed. This includes removing moss or built-up debris, restoring memorials with environmentally safe products, and caring for the surrounding areas — such as refreshing chippings, maintaining boundaries, and ensuring the site is thoughtfully maintained and dignified.

We also provide services such as painting of lettering and sensitive repairs where appropriate and can accommodate personal requests — from placing flowers in a loved one’s favourite colours to reading a poem or message at the graveside. These small gestures mean a great deal, and we feel privileged to be trusted with them.

But beyond the practical side, it’s about presence and respect. We take time to pause, reflect — because every memory deserves to be truly cherished.

Q: Conservation and protecting the stones and memorials is of the utmost importance. What steps do you take to ensure this, and why you feel it is so important?

Respecting the integrity of each memorial is absolutely at the heart of our work. Our team is fully trained in stone conservation techniques and holds relevant accreditations to ensure we care for each grave safely and professionally.

We use biodegradable, non-invasive cleaning agents specifically designed for memorial stonework, and we always tailor our methods to the condition and material of the grave. These stones represent a family’s history — sometimes dating back generations — so preserving them respectfully is as important as cleaning them.

Q: We love the concept of your pre-planning service for arranging the care of one’s own final resting place. Have you seen a growing interest in people making plans ahead of time?

Yes, definitely. We’ve seen a real shift in how people think about end-of-life planning. Many want to ease the future burden on loved ones by planning in advance — and tending to their final resting place is a natural extension of that.

Our pre-planning service allows people to outline exactly how they’d like their grave or memorial to be cared for — right down to the type of flowers, how often we visit, and even the tone of communication with family. It brings peace of mind knowing this care will continue, and their wishes will be honoured.

We’ve also had the chance to connect with professionals in funeral care and end-of-life planning, and we truly value the shared commitment to supporting families through such meaningful moments. If our work resonates, we’d be glad to hear from others working in this space and explore ways we might support one another.

Q: It must be such a comfort for families knowing that their loved ones’ graves are being lovingly maintained. Do you find that you build a special relationship with some of the families?

Absolutely. Over time, many of the families we support feel like extended family. They trust us not only to care for a physical space, but to hold emotional space as well.  We often receive messages of thanks after sending photos, or stories about the person we’re tending the grave for. In some cases, we’ve even been invited to light candles on anniversaries or place special personal items, which is always an honour.

Grief doesn’t have a timeline, and families tell us it means everything to know someone is still showing up to remember — week after week, year after year.

Q: Why is your floral and wreath laying service particularly helpful in the days following burial?  

After a burial, families and friends often place floral tributes at the grave.  Those flowers naturally begin to wilt within days.  For many families, it’s heartbreaking to return and see that. Our service offers a gentle solution: we return to the grave a few days after the funeral to respectfully tend and remove or tidy wilted flowers and if requested replace them with a fresh arrangement or wreath.   It helps to ease the emotional burden of that first visit back. 

Q: We love that Cherished Services is a family business, with mostly family members providing your grave tending services throughout the UK. How do you feel this influences the way you work and the service you provide?

Working as a family brings a depth of trust and consistency that really sets the tone for everything we do. Everyone on our team shares the same values of respect, reliability, and care — and that comes through in every visit.

Because of our close connection, we hold one another accountable and support each other emotionally, which is so important in a service like this. Families can feel that unity in how we communicate, and in the attention to detail that goes into each visit.

As we grow, we continue to build meaningful relationships with others working in bereavement care — funeral directors, estate planners, grief counsellors — who help us extend our support even further.

Q: And finally, is there a person or a particular book that has inspired you along the way?

There’s a quote by Maya Angelou that’s guided us from the start: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”  That’s what we aim for — with every grave we tend, every family we speak with, and every visit we make.

We’re also both inspired by the people we meet through this work — those quietly caring for loved ones or bravely making plans for the future. It’s a privilege to walk beside them in some small way.
